It’s hard to believe that it’s already been a month since I blogged “Take action at the State Fair.” That’s how quickly these last couple of months before election day are going to go! We’re just a little over two months away from election day and we’ve still got plenty of work to do.
It’s been awesome to see all of the pictures popping up of folks at the fair with their Vote NO tshirts on. I especially am excited about getting my Vote NO on a stick fan that I can carry around with me at the fair. In fact, it sounds like demand has been so strong that Minnesotans United are looking for volunteers to assemble more!
NEEDED: VOLUNTEERS! We’ve had an overwhelming demand for our “Vote No on a Stick” fans at the Minnesota State Fair – and now we’re in need of volunteers to help us put together more. Can you volunteer a few hours to make sure every fairgoer gets their own Vote No on a Stick? Email Sara at sara@mnunited.org.
If you’ve been looking for an easy way to get involved and take action, the State Fair provides a great opportunity! I don’t know if they’re still looking for volunteers to assemble fans, but I know that they could always use more folks out and about at the fair itself helping to staff the Vote NO booth and talking to Minnesotans. Click on this link to find more information on how to sign up to volunteer.
And if you’ve snapped some pictures yourself at the State Fair, send them my way! I’ll be posting a couple in the next couple of days.
Thank you to everyone that has volunteered already. Every day, we continue to educate and help Minnesota voters understand why this mean-spirited amendment would have far-reaching negative effects.

My Response: Are you against straight people?
Reporter’s response: I’m the reporter: I ask questions, you answer.
My Response: You have a pulse, I have a pulse. You can ask questions of me and I can ask questions of you.
I am not against people. I against ignoring a scientific principle: the principle that a male and female fish are required to produce another fish, a male and female bird are required to produce another bird, and a male and female human being are required to produce another human being.
This is the way it has been for billions of years, and laws or wishes will not change the basic principles that science, as well as observation, has shown us.

/ August 31, 2012Harvey,
I’m glad to hear that you are not against people. Sadly, there are many folks out there that judge others and treat people poorly just because of who they are. Thank you for not being one of them.
I am a little confused with your example of the male and female fish and how they tie into the conversation at hand. We’re talking about whether or not the Minnesota State Constitution should be updated to limit the rights of committed same-sex couples to enter into a union to express their love for one another.
By keeping this amendment out of our State Constitution, we don’t change the fact that a male and female fish are still required to reproduce, nor do we change “the basic principles that science” has taught anyone. We simply keep the conversation open around whether or not two committed individuals should be able to express their love for one another and be recognized by the government.
Currently, marriage is already defined between one man and one woman in the State of Minnesota, and so nothing changes if this amendment is defeated. However, if passed, it sends a very strong message to residents of this state: We will allow a majority to vote on the rights of a minority; we will amend the Constitution of our state to say, for the first time, someone is less than another. And that’s not ok with me.
As someone who is not against people, I would imagine that’s not ok with you either.
Thanks for taking part in the conversation.
