Some new polling data from CBS News/New York Times finds that when presented a choice between marriage, civil unions and no recognition at all, only 38 percent of respondents support gay marriage. With that said, another 24 percent support civil unions. 33 percent of the respondents don’t believe there should be any legal recognition.
These numbers seem to conflict with a poll from Gallup that got a lot of press last week that the majority of Americans (54%) consider gay or lesbian relations as morally acceptable. However, in that poll, there were only two options: Morally Acceptable and Morally Wrong.
When looking at the two together, it seems that America is ready to recognize same-sex couples, however, as been seen in every state facing a marriage amendment America might not quite be ready to apply the M-word to that recognition.
