Minnesota Marriage Amendment

Information, facts and articles related to the vote on Marriage that will appear on Minnesotan's ballots in 2012.

Reporting stolen yard signs

Sadly, there have been multiple reports of Vote No yard signs being stolen across the state. Because these signs are personal property, it is very important that you report this theft to your local authorities. Additionally, Stand Up, Stand Out! Bloomington MN is also recommending that you report stolen signs to Out Front Minnesota so that these crimes can be tracked.

Stand Up also provides a couple of ideas on how to discourage future theft:

Affix your sign to a fence, wall, door, or tree; put it above the front door; put it in a front window.
Keep it close to the house, not out by the sidewalk or street.
Put an American flag sticker on it
Put one of those “This property under video surveillance” stickers on it.
Put a sticker on it, or write on it with Sharpie: PLEASE STEAL THIS SIGN, IF YOU DO I WILL JUST DONATE ANOTHER $10 TO DEFEAT THE ANTI-MARRIAGE AMENDMENT.

For additional information, check out theirĀ post on Facebook.

Note: Some folks are taking a creative approach to let vandals and thieves know they won’t be silenced. For everyone that has had to deal with this, I’m truly sorry. This is the type of hatred and ignorance that will only continue to spread if this amendment passes here in Minnesota.

I found this website because I googled for Minnesota, amendment and yard signs: my yard sign, however, was a pro-marriage yard sign “Vote Yes, Marriage, one man, one woman”, and it has been stolen (and promptly replaced) thrice in the last two weeks. If you are an amendment opponent and had your sign stolen, maybe you find comfort in “idiots are to be found on all sides”.

    • Hi Peter,
While we may disagree on the amendment, we’re both in agreement that stealing and/or vandalizing personal property is simply wrong.

One of the things that I’ve appreciated most this past year is how so many of my friends, co-workers and members of the faith community have been able to have civil conversations about such an important matter: equality. While we may not always see eye-to-eye, I truly believe that we’re better for having the conversation.

As for calling the vandals “idiots” (regardless of what side you’re on), you sink down to their level of negativity. I’m guessing that some of those folks are just like you and me, however misguided their means may be. They probably believe that they are standing up for what is right. But there is a better way to stand up for your beliefs: Talk to people. Educate each other. Seek common ground and understanding.

That’s what I try to do every day via this blog. I think if you had a chance to get to know me, Peter, you’d find that I’m a pretty upstanding guy who doesn’t deserve to be penalized because I fall in love with someone of the same gender. That’s what this amendment does, it limits freedoms and rights, and that’s just not Minnesotan. Heck, that’s not even American.

Thanks again for stopping by. Hopefully, you’ll take a nugget or two away from this site as to why voting NO this NOvember is in our best interests. I’d be happy to chat more as well, just use the Contact link at the top of the page.

    • Sadly, I’ve received numerous reports of Vote No yard signs being stolen or vandalized across the metro this past week and weekend. Regardless of side, I would encourage you to report when your personal property is damaged or stolen.

Our “yes” sign was stolen twice!!! Now we got a huge one and no one has messed with it!!! Also pointed a landscape light at it to light it up!!! We have lots of Yes signs and I havent seen a No sign in our neighborhood. I would never steal anyones sign, very immature.

    • Hi Lora,
Sorry to hear that your signs were stolen. Unfortunately, neither side seems to be immune to this behavior.

I am curious to know more about where your passion in supporting this mean-spirited amendment comes from? You seem quite proud* with all of those exclamation points you use to have created a “huge” sign and even put a light on it.

Before you go out to the polls next week, I’d encourage you to take a minute and read the following post:

*PS- I think pride is actually a sin. But, then again, I’m careful not to pick and choose verses from the Bible to persecute others and take away their rights. That wouldn’t seem very American. Or Christian. Judge not, Lora. Judge not…

    • Patti,
I’m sorry to hear that your sign was stolen. I’ve heard more and more folks reporting their Vote No signs have been stolen. It is indeed sad.

In the final days leading up to the election, Minnesotans United for All Families is offering all remaining yard signs for $5. For a listing of all MN United offices, check out this link:

Thank you for standing up for equality and letting your voice be heard!
