Bishop to Bishop – An open letter

Last week, Herbert Chilstrom, former presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, penned an open letter to Catholic Archbishop, John Niensedt.

Truly, it’s a letter you don’t want to miss. I’ve included just a small excerpt to get you intrigued…

I recognize your authority in formulating positions for your own flock in Minnesota. That is one thing. But for you and others to campaign for an amendment that imposes your stance on all citizens in Minnesota, including other Christians, believers of other faith groups and nonbelievers, is overstepping your bounds.

Chilstrom then goes on to share how time and time again, the church has failed when attempting to force a stand in political waters. He also educates Niensedt on the definition of “republic” and why the separate of church and state is “genius” for America.

Don’t miss out; read Chilstrom’s open letter in its entirety. Then reblog if you think its as awesome.

Southeast Minnesota ELCA to Oppose Marriage Amendment

Following their friends to the Northeast, the Southeast Minnesota Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church passed a resolution opposing the marriage amendment this past weekend.

More good news from the Lutheran Church!

Northeastern Minnesota ELCA to Oppose Marriage Amendment

In February, I blogged about how the Minneapolis Evangelical Lutheran Church in American (ELCA) voted to oppose the marriage amendment on the ballot this fall. In late April, the Northeastern Minnesota Synod of the ELCA met and passed a similar resolution:

…the Northeastern Minnesota Synod in Assembly affirm its welcome, care for and support same-gender couples and their families and oppose legislation or public policies that would prevent same-gender couples and their families from pursuing ordinary legislative or legal means to gain the support and protections afforded to all others.

Click through to read the entire post from Bishop Thomas M. Aitken. In his letter, he shares that there may be disagreement around scripture, but reminds his parishioners that in St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, scripture reminds each of us that “no one of us knows all the answers, we know only in part in this life.”

A very nicely written letter. And yet another religious group coming out against this mean-spirited amendment.
