Breaking: Star Tribune Editorial Board, “Vote ‘no’ on marriage amendment”
In yet another sign of growing opposition to the mean-spirited marriage amendment, the Editorial Board of the Star Tribune published an open letter this evening publicly opposing the amendment:
On Nov. 6 voters will be asked to add a ban on marriage between gays and lesbians to the state Constitution. At its core, the debate is about fairness and freedom — and about what does or does not belong in our Constitution.
With those key principles in mind, Minnesota should be the first state in the nation to decline such a proposal. Denying something as basic as marriage to two committed adults has no place in a state’s most important legal document.
The Editorial Board refutes several arguments from amendment supporters, including the claim that somehow allowing same-sex couples the opportunity to wed would harm children and families:
As to the “defense” of traditional marriage: There is no legitimate proof that same-sex marriages have any impact whatsoever on other families or relationships.
Yes, some marriages produce children, but many do not. It’s certainly not the sole reason for marriage in modern society. Yet studies have shown that marriage is indeed good for children — the commitment tends to result in more stability and responsibility from the adults involved — whether the parents are gay or straight.
There’s a lot more to the letter than the above, be sure to check it out in its entirety. The Editorial Board conclude their letter with a powerful close:
We’d urge voters to think about the gay or lesbian friend and coworker in the next cubicle, the nice same-sex couple down the street, or the beloved gay family member. They have the same hopes and dreams as heterosexuals, and for many that includes the desire to marry and form a family with the person they love.
In our hearts and souls, we Minnesotans are basically fair people who believe in human rights. That fundamental sense of humanity should lead to a “no” vote on the marriage amendment.
Thank you, Star Tribune, for standing on the right side of history.
Hamline University faculty overwhelmingly oppose amendment
Today, the faculty at Hamline University voted to approve a resolution opposing the mean-spirited marriage amendment. 85 percent of eligible faculty supported the resolution while 10 percent voted against taking a public, anti-amendment stance.
According to KMSP-TV:
Having defined its stance, Hamline’s faculty is now calling on university president Linda Hanson to publicly oppose the marriage amendment.
Text of the resolution:
WHEREAS Hamline University is a learning community that values diversity and inclusiveness; and
WHEREAS Hamline University recognizes and embraces the values of the United Methodist Church; and
WHEREAS the Minnesota Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church has publicly opposed the Minnesota “marriage amendment; and
WHEREAS the Minnesota “marriage amendment” would deny civil rights to members of our community:
Be it resolved that we, the faculty of Hamline University, oppose the “marriage amendment” that seeks to enshrine discrimination in the constitution of the state of Minnesota, and
Be it resolved that we, the faculty of Hamline University, call upon President Linda Hanson, as Hamline’s representative, to affirm Hamline University’s values and its belief in liberal education by publicly opposing the “marriage amendment.”
With 41 days until election day, I hope to post news like this EVERY day from here on out!
Macalester Faculty Vote No!
Add Macalester faculty to the list of growing amendment opposition! Just the other day I shared how St. Olaf faculty voted to oppose the amendment and now last week, Macalester faculty joined the club.
According to the Mac Weekly, the faculty vote does not establish Macalester’s position on the amendment. Next month, the Board of Trustees will consider a vote that would represent the school.
Keep the good news coming!
Birchwood Cafe Votes No
We’re sure going to have a lot of restaurant eating to do! Earlier this week, I blogged about Hell’s Kitchen and their very public stance around supporting a NO vote.
Now another restaurant is encouraging Minnesotans to vote NO on the mean-spirited marriage amendment. According to their Facebook Cover Graphic, Birchwood Cafe supports marriage equality here in Minnesota and everywhere else. It’s great to see more and more businesses in Minnesota standing on the right side of history and encouraging voters to do the right thing in NOvember. Thanks, Birchwood Cafe!
How you can say thank you? It’s easy as 1, 2, 3:
1. Like Birchwood Cafe on Facebook
2. Send the owners a note of thanks
3. Visit the restaurant and say thank you with your dollars
Breaking News: Hell’s Kitchen Votes NO!
Personally, I’ve been a fan of Hell’s Kitchen since moving to the Cities. The place has tons of seating, great food and fun happy hour specials.
Well, now I’ve got one more reason to like this place. Tonight, the owners of Hell’s Kitchen posted an open letter on their Facebook Page to a patron who expressed his concern of the restaurant’s support of the North Star Roller Girls because NSRG have taken a “Vote NO” stance. With permission from Hell’s Kitchen, I’ve posted the letter below in it’s entirety.
An open letter to RB:
Last week, when you threatened to boycott Hell’s Kitchen if we continue to support the North Star Roller Girls because of their “Vote NO” stance on the marriage amendment vote, we were taken aback. Not because you said you’d announce your boycott via Facebook, tweets and calls into local conservative radio shows, but because you were obviously unaware of Hell’s Kitchen’s fierce, longtime support of the GLBT Community. We haven’t just supported the “Vote NO” stance, we’ve embraced it. And we haven’t just embraced it, we’ve also walked the talk by throwing a fundraiser for it as well.
Our employees and 12,448 Hell’s Kitchen Facebook Fans may or may not agree with us, but they know exactly where we stand on this issue. We seem to be in good company because General Mills, IBM, Microsoft, Apple, Google, American Airlines, Gap, Nike, Amazon, T-Mobile, Thomson Reuters, RBC Wealth Management, REI, and hundreds of other businesses have also refused to be bullied. They, too have stood up for what the United Nations calls basic human rights. The exhaustive list also includes schools (Augsburg, Capella, U of M, etc), cities (Duluth, St. Paul, Minneapolis, St. Louis Park, Edina, Falcon Heights, Golden Valley, Maplewood, Crystal, Robbinsdale, Mankato, Shakopee), and more and more numerous churches.
Of course we risk alienating certain customers by so publicly getting on a soapbox, but interestingly, when General Mills announced its opposition of the amendment, their stock price shot UP. When NOM called for a boycott of Starbucks, a “Thank You Starbucks” Web campaign received more than 650,000 supporters, while NOM’s “Dump Starbucks” campaign has received about 45,000.
Yes, we realize the amendment has a good chance of passing, which in our view would be a crime against human dignity. Regardless of the final vote, Hell’s Kitchen (and Angel Food Bakery) always have and always will truly love, embrace, and supports the right of our GLBT employees, customers, and community to live authentic lives. We’re proud that Minnesotans from all walks of life have always felt at home here, and will continue to work hard on behalf of ideals dear to our hearts. Are you aware of our strong support of Minnesota farmers each and every day, or that we throw open our doors to a different Minnesota charity every Monday night?
In closing, while we’re proud of our damn good food, our extraordinary staff and our truly unique environment, we all believe that what has really made us Minnesota’s busiest restaurant (and one of the most successful independently-owned restaurants in the country) is how active we try to be in the lives of people across our great state.
Warmest personal regards,
The owners and/or founders of Hell’s Kitchen and Angel Food Bakery (Cynthia Gerdes, Mitch Omer, Steve Meyer, Kim Meyer, Tony Perella and Katy Gerdes)
Now there are three simple ways YOU, too, can take action. First, like their page on Facebook. Second, take a moment to express your thanks (send them a note, share the link to this blog post on your wall, etc.). And finally, third, stop on in and say “thank you” with your business (here’s their website in case you need directions).
Thank you, Hell’s Kitchen, for standing up for love and equality.
Roseville, Minnesota: Vote NO
Roseville joins the list of Minnesota cities that have come out against the mean-spirited marriage amendment on ballots this fall.
On Monday night, the Roseville City Council voted unanimously to oppose the marriage amendment. This makes Roseville the 13th Minnesota city to speak out against writing inequality into the Minnesota State Constitution.
My friend David happened to be one of the people that spoke to the Council asking them to oppose the amendment. He shared with me what one amendment supporter had to say:
…some guy got up and said that there were 10,000 studies saying that kids need a mother and father, and that gay men become incontinent because of their “lifestyle.”
He read a definition of marriage from a 30-year-old dictionary… I was thinking, “He’s [Minnesota for Marriage's] target audience. Exploit their fear and feed it with lies that sound just credible enough to be true.”
It saddens me to see the ignorance we are up against in this great state that I call home. However, I have hope when I see cities taking a very public stand encouraging their voters to say NO to discrimination and inequality.
Roseville City Council members, I thank you for giving me (and hundreds of thousands of other Minnesotans) hope.
Augsburg College opposes marriage amendment
Wouldn’t it be great if every day I could post: “[xyz] opposes marriage amendment!” This week, we’ve seen amendment opposition continue to grow. Both Mankato and Augsburg College have spoken publicly about their opposition to the mean-spirited amendment.
According to MPR:
The announcement Tuesday makes the Minneapolis liberal arts school the first traditional university in the state to come out against the amendment. The Minneapolis-based online institution Capella University has also gone on record against it.
T-Mobile, REI, Mankato and now Augsburg College… It’s great to see so many organizations around the country standing up for equality!
Minnesota cities that oppose marriage amendment
I just posted about Mankato becoming the 12th Minnesota city to oppose the mean-spirited marriage amendment. In case you’re keeping track, Minnesotans United has the complete list on their site:
1. Duluth (12/19/2011)
2. Saint Paul (01/25/2012)
3. Minneapolis (01/26/2012)
4. St Louis Park (03/05/2012)
5. Edina (03/20/2012)
6. Falcon Heights (o4/11/2012)
7. Golden Valley (05/01/2012)
8. Maplewood (06/11/2012)
9. Crystal (06/12/2012)
10. Robbinsdale (06/19/2012)
11. Mountain Iron (07/02/2012)
12. Mankato (08/13/2012)
As I look at this list, there are a couple of cities that I didn’t even realize came out against the marriage amendment! With over 800 cities in Minnesota, we’ve still got more room for celebration in the next couple of months! :)
For the most current list, check out Minnesotans United Cities page.
Mankato opposes Minnesota marriage amendment
It’s official, yet another Minnesota city has come out against the marriage amendment! According to the HRC, Mankato joins 11 other cities across the state of Minnesota that have already voted on resolutions to oppose the mean-spirited marriage amendment on ballots this fall.
HRC provides a great idea on how to turn today’s news into a way to take action:
Statewide news like this is a great opportunity to talk about why this issue is important to all Minnesotans. These one-on-one conversations are key to defeating the marriage ban in November.
Gosh, this brings me back to last December when I blogged about Duluth being the first city to speak out against the marriage amendment!
I wonder which city will be next in saying NO to discrimination and NO to the marriage amendment?
Target Corp. and the Marriage Amendment
Target supports inclusivity and diversity in every aspect of our business and has a long history of supporting the LGBT community through giving, volunteerism and event sponsorship and participation. Target does not believe that a constitutional fight over the issue is good for Minnesota or the state’s ability to attract jobs and grow the economy. Consistent with our long-standing support of civic engagement, we are encouraging our team members to exercise their right to vote.
Target Corp. statement to media

I posted about this earlier today, but wanted to repost the quote in its entirety. So very happy to see another corporation ‘come out’ against this mean-spirited amendment. Unfortunately, the other side is already lashing out at Target for simply supporting equality.

Target Corp. ‘Comes Out’ Against Amendment
You may remember a post I shared a couple weeks ago regarding Target Corp. and their neutral stance on the marriage amendment. Well, have I got news for you!
Last Sunday, the retailer announced a “Wear it with Pride” campaign featuring a collection of Pride tshirts just in time for summer. Tshirts include words like “Harmony” and “Pride.” One design in the collection was created by rocker Gwen Stefani and reads, “Love is Love.” Even better, 100% of the entire purchase price is being donated to the Family Equality Council (an organization working to promote equality for LGBT families).
Almost immediately, Target began receiving backlash from groups like Minnesota for Marriage and the American Family Association for, and I quote, “ramming same-sex marriage down the throats of the American people.” (source)
When groups like the AFA make such ridiculous statements, it mobilizes the LGBT community and their allies who help refute these claims. One of the posts I read last night said that Target was “attacking traditional marriage.” About half a dozen people posted in response asking the author how a collection of tshirts is threatening their marriage. One poster called out the irony behind leaders who make these claims and the fact that some of them have had three to four of their own “traditional marriages!” That made me chuckle.
In response to the hubbub, Target released the following statement:
Target supports inclusivity and diversity in every aspect of our business and has a long history of supporting the LGBT community through giving, volunteerism and event sponsorship and participation. Target does not believe that a constitutional fight over the issue is good for Minnesota or the state’s ability to attract jobs and grow the economy. Consistent with our long-standing support of civic engagement, we are encouraging our team members to exercise their right to vote.
Yeah. Read that again:
Target does not believe that a constitutional fight over the issue is good for Minnesota or the state’s ability to attract jobs and grow the economy.
I was sitting at my desk when one of my co-workers emailed me the link to theKare11.com article and I was floored! While Target has a long history of supporting the LGBT community (Pride, Project 515, Red Ribbon Ride, AIDS Walk, Bridge for Youth, Out & Equal, domestic partner benefits, partner discount, partner leave to name a few), I’m not sure I was expecting to see a statement like this considering the controversy over the Minnesota Forward donation a couple years back (which I talked about in my previous blog post). But I’ll take it!
Minnesota for Marriage has already used all of this to mobilize their base asking for each person to donate $100 to offset the dollars Target will donate to the Family Equality Council. I’m expecting that One Million Moms will probably have something to say about this whole situation as well.
But even still, this is a historic day as another one of Minnesota’s Fortune 500 companies has ‘come out’ against this mean-spirited amendment.
Thank you for supporting all families, Target. You make me very proud.
Author’s note: Target team member involved with Target’s LGBTA Business Council.
NAACP backs same-sex marriage
On Saturday, the NAACP passed a resolution endorsing same-sex marriage as a civil right and opposing efforts to build discrimination or hatred into law. This is a very important day for the marriage equality movement, as this should help increase black voter support of same-sex marriage. If you wonder why this is so important, look back to California where exit polling found 70% of black voters opposed same-sex marriage in 2008.
Here is hoping that our Allies in ALL communities in Minnesota step up and speak out against this mean-spirited amendment. The acknowledgement by the NAACP that same-sex marriage is truly a civil right should hopefully help increase support from black voters and reduce the likelihood of another California.
Brad Pitt on Gay Marriage
I figure folks could use a end-of-week smile! Check out the 60-second clip from Ellen where Brad Pitt speaks out against Prop 8 back in 2008.
I don’t think it has any place in our definition of America.
Couldn’t agree with you more, Brad. These propositions and amendments have no place in our constitution. Thanks to all of the folks that lend their voices to this fight. Keep telling your story and speaking out. That’s how we will defeat these mean-spirited measures.
