Victory in all four!

In addition to Minnesota, you’ve heard me talk about Maine, Maryland and Washington throughout the past year. Well, I’m happy to officially report that Washington State has finally been called: Washingtonians have stood for equality and voted in favor of same-sex marriage!

That means that each of the four states that voted on marriage equality on Tuesday took a stand on the right side of history!

Here’s a great graphic from TheFour.com that currently graces my Facebook Profile!

Victory in all four

Congratulations to all of my friends in Maine, Maryland, Washington and of course, Minnesota.

Couple of live tweets

Here’s a quick update on the four states voting on marriage equality:

Polls still open

*Reminder, a NO vote in Minnesota keeps an anti-marriage amendment out of our constitution. Maryland and Maine are voting for same-sex marriage, so a yes there is a good thing.

Same scare tactics used in Minnesota, Maine, Maryland and Washington

Frank Schubert has been busy in Minnesota, Maine, Maryland and Washington this election season. The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) has been pouring out-of-state money into each of these races to help fund ads filled with scare tactics and misleading information to trick people into voting against equality.

If you have any doubt, take a look at this fantastic video that TheFour put together in which they compare the commercials currently running in each of the four states that have marriage initiatives on the ballot.

Same scare tactics and commercials

While each commercial has their state-specific organization stamped on the screen, the fact that each commercial is identical highlights an organized effort at the national level to stop marriage equality.

The commercials use the same messaging that has worked so well for Schubert in other states like California where voters elected to limit the rights of committed same-sex couples.

Minnesota, Maine, Maryland and Washington, let’s send Schubert a strong message: Your scare tactics are outdated and voters are smart enough to see through your twisting of the truth.

Oh, and take your money and mean-spirited commercials elsewhere. In Minnesota, we believe in the Golden Rule.

In Minnesota, we Vote No.

Barack Obama on ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’

Change is the fact that for the first time in history you don’t have to hide who you love in order to serve the country that you love… We ended ‘don’t ask, don’t tell.’

Catholic Church Appears to Reverse Stand on Gay Marriage

Interesting article that sheds light on a couple of states where the Catholic Church seems to be reversing their hard stand against gay marriage:

  • Roman Catholic Church of New Hampshire endorsed civil unions bill on March 19, just two days prior to the state legislature’s vote
  • Roman Catholic Church of Maine ceased all external opposition to this year’s marriage equality ballot campaign

Oh, but don’t you worry! That’s not the full story. If you wander over to CatholicNH.org, you’ll see the broader story:

The Diocese of Manchester consistently has opposed legislation that would establish civil unions. However, the [civil unions bill] falls into a category of legislation which the US Bishops have previously considered: bills in civil law which may not reflect the fullness of the Church’s teaching, but which nonetheless provide an “incremental improvement” in the current law and a “step toward full restoration of justice.”

So, essentially what the Catholic Church of New Hampshire is saying is this:

Providing a committed and loving gay couple a Civil Union is far better than allowing them to get married. And while it’s only an “incremental improvement” we’ll keep fighting until those gay people have no rights, just like it was before. That’s what it means to have a “full restoration of justice!”

Yeah, no dice.

I’ve said this before and I’ll reiterate now: I don’t mean to speak out against any one group on this blog, but the Catholic Church continues to come out against marriage equality time and time again and it almost feels like now they’re just being mean. With that said, I was raised Catholic and have many Catholic friends that love me and don’t hold these same views. That’s why I will not lump all Catholics (or any religion, for that matter) together in one bucket. But it is important that we all know how these religious organizations are attempting to influence the governing body of the land.

And remember, it’s liberty and justice for all.

Minnesota Catholics Ask Bishops To Pull Funding

While this won’t happen, I love that Catholics for Marriage Equality Minnesota have asked Archbishop Nienstedt and all bishops in the state to withdraw financial support for the marriage amendment. Apparently, Bishop Malone of Maine announced there that the Catholic Hierarchy would take no active role in “fundraising, staffing, advertising, or campaigning against marriage equality” earlier this month. Would be great to see Minnesota Catholics follow suit, however, we’ve already seen their fundraising arm in full action and can expect a lot more where that came from.
